DASPU, ‘das putas’, is the name of the new fashion brand created in Brazil by a group of sex workers, the prostitutes of the Tiradentes Square in downtown Rio.
The name of the brand is a sendup of the ‘Daslu’ stores the oh so chic fashion house in Brazil. However, unlike Brazil’s elite fashion house, Daspu is the creation of Davida, an association made up of sex workers who fight for the recognition of rights for prostitutes.
This unlikely project allows sex workers to earn some money modeling, to participate in the creation of the collections and to present another image of prostitutes.
Maria, Jani and Vau are the most employed models and they are convinced that fashion can help to overcome the cliches and stigma of their work.
The first autumn-winter collection has been shown in Rio for the Rio Fashion Week and in São Paulo for their respective fashion show.
